Should we build an internal AI team or work with an outside partner?

Below roughly fifty employees, an outside partner is almost always faster and cheaper, because one internal hire cannot cover integration, model work and monitoring at once. Build internally when AI becomes part of what you sell, not just how you operate. Many companies start outside and bring the running of it in-house later.

What one internal person cannot cover

A working automation needs integration with your systems, prompt and retrieval design, error handling, security review and ongoing monitoring. Those are different skills. A single hire will be strong at one of them and will learn the rest on your time, which is fine if you have the time and expensive if you do not.

The hybrid that works for SMEs

One person inside the company owns the processes and the priorities; the building and the monitoring come from outside. The internal owner does not need to be technical, they need to know the business and have authority. This is the arrangement most of our clients settle into after the first project.

How to avoid being locked in

Ask for the configuration, the documentation and export access from the start, and make sure the accounts and connections are in your name, not the supplier's. With those three, changing partner is an inconvenience rather than a rebuild.
